The last two years have been marked by lockdowns, school closures and disruption to learning, including the cancellation of exams as we know them. Now, pupils sitting their GCSEs this summer face exceptional challenges – especially as the first cohort returning to ‘normal’ exam conditions.

How is this ‘new normal’ affecting Y11s and their mental health?

For our 2022 Exam Anxiety and Mental Health Report, we surveyed 4,000 teachers across the UK. We tried to understand their views on how Y11s are faring this year, what they believe are the biggest threats to their mental health, and how this picture has changed since the start of the pandemic.

Some of the headlines include:

  • 49% of teachers say that Y11s are coping ‘worse’ with exam anxiety this year
  • 61% agree that ‘lack of engagement with learning’ has increased
  • 47% feel that worries about school closures and changes to exams are damaging pupils’ wellbeing
