What was the National Tutoring Programme?

The National Tutoring Programme (NTP) was a government-funded programme that provided schools with access to high-quality tutoring services, at subsidised prices. It ended in August 2024 after 4 years

The NTP was designed to help disadvantaged pupils catch up on the learning they may have missed during the pandemic. It provided ring-fenced funding that meant over 5 million tutoring courses could be started, leading to increased grades and confidence for so many pupils.

How did the NTP work?

The NTP was delivered through NTP tuition providers who were approved by the DfE and audited annually to maintain the strictest standards.

MyTutor was an approved NTP Partner for 4 years running! This meant we were NTP and DfE approved and our tutor training, quality and performance, safeguarding, and the support we give in our schools all met (and continue to meet!) the highest government standards.

How effective was the National Tutoring Programme?

The NTP was widely welcomed by school leaders and has been an effective way to support disadvantaged pupils post-pandemic. Research from The Sutton Trust showed that where the most deprived areas used to have the lowest rates of tutoring, through the NTP they now have the highest.

Research by Public First has shown that the NTP has led to, or will lead to, 390k grade improvements and that 2.96 million students received on average 11 hours of tutoring.

The Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) has conducted several studies showing the effectiveness of tutoring in general. Recent research shows that 87% of learners would continue with tutoring, 75% said they enjoyed learning more than before, and that tuition is one of the best evidenced interventions to support disadvantaged pupils' attainment.

Here at MyTutor, we see disadvantaged pupils make huge strides with the help of our tutors. In fact, pupils were 3x more likely to get a grade 4 or above after 10 lessons with MyTutor.

The National Tutoring Programme and MyTutor

Though we were around long before the NTP was introduced, the subsidy has made tutoring accessible to millions more pupils. That's why we're proud to have been a National Tutoring Programme partner for 4 years running. We've delivered well over 60,000 NTP-subsidised lessons to learners across the country.
